Answer:

Plants usually store food in their stem. But in certain plants food is stored in the leaves for which they are modified in different ways. They usually become thick and fleshy.

In onion the bulbs are made up of bases of fleshy leaves , which are arranged in a concentric manner around the apical bud of shoot. The normal green leaves are aerial and thick cylindrical. They perform photosynthesis, and food is stored in fleshy part which is under ground.

Garlic is another plant where each clove is the base of a leaf storing food. Every clove in garlic is covered by its own membranous tunic. All cloves are again covered by a common tunic and thus it becomes a compound tunicated bulb.

In this pic fleshy leaf bases are forming a bulb ( underground) and green leaves are aerial and perform photosynthesis.

In addition to these, many members of family Crassulaceae ( including Sanseviera, Bryophyllum, sedum ) bear succulent leaves which are thick due to storage of water.
