name one property that a fuse wire should have

Electric fuse: An electric fuse is a safety device that breaks the electric circuit when there is an excessive flow of current in the circuit. It prevents damage to the electrical appliances and possible electric fire. An electric fuse works on the principle of the heating effect of current. A fuse consists of a piece of thin wire (generally an alloy of tin and copper) having a low melting point. It is always connected in series with the electrical circuit (Fig. 14.11). When excessive current (beyond a safe value) flows in a household circuit, the thin fuse wire gets too much heated, melts and breaks the circuit immediately. The electric current stops flowing in the circuit and thus, damage to various electrical appliances is prevented. When a fuse wire gets melted, it is replaced by a new fuse wire to restore the electric supply in the household circuit.
- Do not investigate an electric fuse connected to the main circuit, visit an electric repair shop and replace the burnt out fuses with the new ones.
- We should always use proper fuses that have been specified for particular appliance, carrying ISI mark. We should not use any wire or strip of metal in place of fuse.
