India was the most prosperous and rich country during the 17th century. Many European nations wanted to visit India and trade with India. After Vasco da Gama found the sea route to India, many European companies came to India.

They were:

Portuguese Company in the year 1498 set up in Cochin.

Dutch East India Company in the year 1602 setup in Masulipatnam.

English East India Company in the year 1600 setup in Surat.

French East India Company in the year 1664 setup in Surat

Danish East India Company in 1616 set up in Serampore.

• The main reason for the establishment of these companies was to trade with Indians.

• The natural resources of India attracted the Europeans.

• The Indian Spices very much attracted the European Companies.

• Others goods like cotton, gold and other minerals attracted the Europeans.
