Soil degradation occurs when soil losses its fertility and productivity due to human activities. The activities that cause soil degradation are as follows-

Overgrazing - Overgrazing occurs when plants are exposed to intensive grazing for long period without any recovery. When animals excessively eat the vegetation from a particular part of the land, it results in damaging the quality of soil and makes it unable for cultivation. When land with less vegetation is exposed to the sun it makes the soil dry and less in nutrition which is further eroded.

Deforestation - Deforestation is the practice of cutting down trees in an uncontrolled manner. Without the bark of the trees, the roots are weak enough to hold the soil structure in its place. Due to this, the soil becomes loose and eroded by wind and rain.

Poor Agricultural Management - When the soil is not nurtured enough by some fertilizer and pesticides the land becomes dry and non-cultivated and the quality of soil decreases making it unsuitable for agriculture.

Over-Cropping - It occurs when the land is under cultivation continuously and is unable to produce humus. Humus is essential for soil as it keeps the soil moist and irrigated. If the humus is not produced then the soil becomes dry and soil erosion takes place.
