It is a stage occurring under unfavourable conditions in Euglena. Under unfavourable conditions the flagellum is thrown off and a number of Euglenae come together and become embedded in a gelatinous mass on the water surface. Each Euglena secretes a double layered cyst. Euglenae now divide by longitudinal binary fission again and again. As a result 16 to 32 daughter forms are produced within a single cyst. The gelatinous mass with the cysts is known as palmella stage. This resembles the palmella stage of many algae. Later the daughter individuals develop flagella and come out of the gelatinous mass and grow into adult Euglenae.
