Tagore never returned the Nobel Prizefor Literature, which was conferred to him for his work 'Gitanjali' in 1913. He, however, had refused to accept the British Knighthood in protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919.

"Born in Calcutta, British India, Rabindranath Tagore was a poet, writer, artist and a musician who was the first ever Nobel laureate from the Indian subcontinent.
He was awarded the Nobel price in 1913 in the category of literature because of his collection of poems in his book named Gitanjali. Tagore’s writing style was unique, deeply immersed in Indian values and western culture which commented on the philosophy, literature, social and daily lives of the people in a manner that touched everyone’s heart.
He refused to accept the title of knighthood due to Jhalianwala Bhag massacre by writing in his letter His Majesty The time has come when badges of honor make our shame glaring in the incongruous context of humiliation .”
