The categories which constitute the French society were divided in the three groups. These groups were called as estates. The three estates were:

The 1st estate - Clergy

The 2nd estate - Nobilty

The 3rd estate - Big business merchants, court officials, lawyers, peasants and artisans, small peasants, landless labour and servants.
