Mitochondria are known as the powerhouses of the cell. The energy required for various chemical activities needed for life is released by mitochondria in the form of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) molecules.

In the cells cytoplasm converts these nutrients into 2 ATP{a simpler and constant form of energy used by our body} and remaining nutrients are converted into 36 ATP by mitochondria . In a single cell 38 ATP are created{actually 40 ATP but 2 ATP are used in the processes so resulting ATP are 38} . Through various reactions{ATP->ADP + P} in mitochondria ATP is converted in carbon dioxide,water and energy .
