  • when dilute hydrochloric acid is added to sodium carbonate a brisk effervescence of carbon dioxide is seen which turns the lime water milky.

Na2CO3 + dil. 2HCl ---> 2NaCl + H2O + CO2 (g)

  • When dilute sulphuric acid is added to barium chloride a white ppt. of barium sulphate is formed

BaCl2 + dil. H2SO4 ---> 2HCl + BaSO4 (ppt)

  • Quick lime is treated with water the water seemingly disappears as quicklime and slaked lime are both white powdery substances.
