Before getting enlightenment, Gautama Buddha was known as prince Siddhartha Gautama.  His father King Shuddhodana was a famous ruler of the Shakya clan in the kingdom of Kosala.  He belonged to the Shakya clan and the Gautama family.  It is surprising that he was born in the Kshatriya caste which was known as caste of warriors.  His other name was Shakyamuni as per the Mahayana literature in Buddhism.
