Answer:
In addition to phospholipids that are the major component of the plasma membrane, the plasma membrane contains many other substances in lesser quanties.
These include the the following:
1. Cholesterol which provides fluidity at low temperatures and rigidity at high temperatures for the plasma membrane.
2. Proteins which have ranging roles from cell signaling, enzyme function, and transportation. Importantly, these proteins are oriented so polar amino acids are found near the surfaces of the membrane while hydrophillic amino acids are found in the middle of the bilayer so that opposing hydrophilic and hydrophobic interactions can be reduced.
3. Carbohydrates also cover the plasma membrane and may or may not be attached to proteins or lipids. They also can serve the function of cell signaling, and often are used for cellular protection.
Cell walls of plants are composed of cellulose while the cell walls of fungi are composed of chitin. Furthermore, the cell walls of bacteria are composed of peptidoglycan.
