In the process of preparation of butane-1,4-diol by the catalytic hydrogenation of an alcoholic solution of maleic acid ester

The improvements comprising catalytic-ally oxidizing hydrocarbon by air to form a gaseous mixture containing maleic anhydride

And then washing said mixture with a monohydric or polyhydric aliphatic.

Then the compound name obtained from the butane in kolbe's electrolysis process is maleic anhydride.

The metal does not play any role other than to form soluble salts here.
