Answer:

World War I, which began in July 1914, lasted till November 1918. The countries involved were divided between the two groups. They were the Axis or the Central Powers and the Allies. The countries involved in these groups were;

a. Axis Powers - Germany, Austria, Hungary, Turkey, large parts of Poland, Croatia, Slovenia, etc. (last three countries were within the Balkan group).

b. Allies - Great Britain, Japan, France, Russia, Italy and the USA (from 1917, under Woodrow Wilson).

The Axis powers were under the Habsburg empire, which was defeated. As a result, the treaty of Vienna was signed.

As you well know, these countries controlled the large part of the world by then, therefore, the war among them was called the World War, since a large number of countries fought as colonies under some European countries.

Hope, this helps.
