The compound carbide is composed of a carbon and also an element with less electronegative element. Carbides are divided into three types based on their chemical bonding. Group 13 metals (includes Lanthanum, Scandium and Yttrium), alkaline earth metals, alkali metals are high electropositive elements forms the saline carbides.

Aluminium forms carbides from the Group 13 on heated above 1275k whereas the other elements like Gallium, Thallium and Indium does not form the carbides. Since these elements does not combine with the carbon in the starting stage, that is why they cannot form carbides normally.
