The wall of alimentary canal contains muscle layers. Rhythmic contraction and relaxation of these muscles pushes the food forward. This is called peristalsis, which occurs all along the gut.
Peristalsis moves food through the digestive tract with alternating waves of muscle contraction and relaxation. Food leaves the mouth when the tongue and pharyngeal muscles propel it into the esophagus.
