Genes

Functional segments of DNA are called as genes. Gene is a segment of DNA that carries information from parents to offsprings and determines the heredity characters in the offsprings.

"DNA or Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid" is the "hereditary unit" of the cell that contains all the genetic information of an individual. It is the information coded in the DNA that is responsible for transmission of traits from the parents to the children.

Mostly, DNA occurs inside the nucleus as Nuclear DNA, though in some cells, nucleus also occurs in the mitochondria in the form of "mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA".

The "functional units of the DNA" are "genes".
