1) When a metal reacts with a dilute acid like HCl, HNO3 etc. hydrogen gas is evolved. The reaction can be shown as follows:
2M + dil. 2HCl → 2MCl + H2↑
Hydrogen gas can be identified by bringing a burning matchstick near the mouth of the test tube in which reaction takes place. Hydrogen gas will burn with a pop sound.

2) Sulphur burns in oxygen to form SO2 (sulphur dioxide) gas. This gas is acidic and turns a damp blue litmus paper to red.
S + O2 → SO2

Some non - metals and their uses are listed below -

1] Oxygen is used for breathing.

2] Chlorine is used for purifying water.

3] Phosphorous is used in crackers.

4] Non - metals like nitrogen is used in fertilizers.

5] Graphite is used as a good conductor of electricity.

6] Pottassium is used in fertilizers.

7] Nitrogen is used by plants.

8] Graphite is used in making leads.

9] Carbon is used as a fuel.

10] Bromine is used in dyes and pesticides

Uses of Metals

Iron metal is use for making cooking vessels , water boilers , stoves, tools , wires, nails , bolts , electromagnets etc.
Aluminium is very light metal so it is use in making the aircraft bodies.
Copper is most widely use for making electric wires and all things related to electricity becaue it is a good conductor of electricity.
Silver is widely use for making jewellery.

Uses of Non-Metals

Phosphorous is used in match-box industry and in fertilizers.
Iodine is used as antiseptic.
Oxygen is essential for all living beings.
Sulphur is used for making fire crackers, gun powder and sulphuric acid.
