The gas produced is hydrogen sulphide (H2S).

When Fe fillings react with sulphur in a solution of dil. H2SO4, H2S gas is generated and the reaction is shown below:

 Fe(s) + S(s) + H2SO4  FeSO4 + H2S.

The properties of the H2S gas is that:

• It is colourless

• It smells like rotten eggs.
