Wood is an organic substance. Burning  wood in presents of oxygen leads to formation of two gases namely CO2 and CO. The gas CO is formed due to incomplete combustion of the wood due to lack insufficient oxygen during burning. Further oxidation of the same gas leads to formation of the gas CO2.
