  When the Constituent Assembly had their first meeting on 6th December 1946, it was both the best and worst of times for India. While Indian independence was within almost close, the threat of partition loomed threateningly. There were large-scale communal riots that had spread in several parts of north India triggered by the Kolkata killings that year. At that time, Gandhiji was busy trying to put off the flames of religious/communal riots.
