There are five main categories for microorganisms. They are -
- Bacteria - Tiny unicellular organism. The shapes of bacterium can be in cocci (Spherical Bacteria) , spirilla (Spiral Bacteria) , bacilli (Rod-shaped Bacteria) or vibrios (Comma-shaped Bacteria). It lives in the air, water, soil, food and decaying organic matter.
- Fungi - Unicellular microbe. It lives on decaying matter. They don't have chlorophyll and they feed on other organisms.
- Algae - Unicellular microbe consisting chlorophyll. Microscopic algae lives in fresh water, sea water, damp soil and on the barks of trees. Some have nuclei and chloroplasts which helps them make their own food by carrying out photosynthesis.
- Protozoa - Unicellular microbe. They live on the bodies of other living organisms, in the sea, fresh water and damp soil. Most of them are parasitic and feed on other organisms.
- Virus - Smallest microorganism. It basically has a strand of genetic material either DNA or RNA and surrounded by protein coat. They reproduce in the host cell.
