Pteridophyta is the highest group of cryptogamae.
The general characteristics of cryptogamae are-
- The plants of pteridophyta are terrestrial and they are mostly grow in cool, moist and shady places. E.g: Fern. Some plants of pteridophyta are aquatic. Eg: Azolla. There are some plants which are xerophytic. eg: Equisetum
- The plant body is sporophytic and can be differentiated into root, stem and leaves.
- Vascular tissue is found in stem and root of Pteridophyta.
- They reproduce by means of spores found inside sporangia
- The roots of the pteridophyta are adventitious.
- They do not show secondary growth due to the absence of cambium.
