Answer:

The most powerful Maratha ruling houses were Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sambhaji Bhosale, and Rajaram Bhosle I. The Peshwas from the Bhat family since Balaji Vishwanath also became prominent in the Maratha kingdom.

Explanation:

The Maratha Empire ruled between 1674 and 1818 was the largest Hindu empire in India after the Gupta Empire. They ruled over a large area, from Afghanistan in the north to Thanjavur in the south, from Sindh in the west to Bengal in the east.

The formal establishment of the empire was with the coronation of Shivaji Bhosale I as Chhatrapati. From the ruins of the Bijapur Sultanate, Shivaji established the Maratha kingdom and revived old Hindu Kingdom traditions and Marathi as a language. He continuously fought with the Mughal Empire and was victorious in most of them. He was compared to Alexander and Julius Caesar by contemporary English writers and travellers including Francois Bernier.

From 1681 to 1689, Sambhaji Bhosale, the eldest son of Shivaji, ruled over the Maratha kingdom. He was engaged in multiple conflicts with the Mughal rulers.

Initially, Peshwas were the subordinates of Chhatrapatis. But later, with the Bhat family since Balaji Vishwanath, they began to dominate and Chhatrapatis became subordinates of Peshwas. Baji Rao I who succeeded Vishwanath never lost a battle and together with his son Balaji Baji Rao made the Peshwas to greatness.
It was during the Peshwas, Marathas were defeated in the Battle of Panipat in 1761.
