Lakshadweep Island is called as a coral island because it is formed from the corals which mean the skeletons of the small sea animals named as Polyps.
There are two methods of formation of coral islands

• Accretion In uplift, the corals come on to the earth crust whereas in rock and sand are accumulated on corals thus forming an island.
