The lakes that are water reservoirs of Thar Desert are the Kuchaman, Sambhar, Didwana, Phalodi and Pachpadra in Rajasthan and Kharaghoda in Gujarat. During rainy season these lakes receive rain water which is collected and later during the fat season gets evaporated.

This desert is  also called as the Great Indian Desert. It is a arid region which is located in the northwestern part of Indian and  covers an area of 200,000 square kms. It acts as a  a natural boundary between the two countries India and Pakistan. It is the world's 9th largest subtropical desert as well as the 17th largest desert.

Of the total area nearly 85% of the desert lies within India, wheras the remaining 15% is in Pakistan. About 170,000 square kms of the entire area of desert lies in India and the remaining 30,000 square kms lies within Pakistan.
