There are 3 landfill sites in Delhi, Bhalswa, Ghazipur and Okhla, which are used for dumping garbage. The Ghazipur landfill has been reclaimed by the government of Delhi by laying geo cells on the slopes of the dump.

First they put a layer of mud and pressed it on the slopes. Then they lay a geo membrane, which looks like a plastic sheet, to trap the gases emanating from the heap, which has a lot of organic material inside and transport them through pipes to a power plant nearby.

Then they put a thin layer of gravel on these sheets and placed square hollow concrete blocks on top of the layer. Then again they covered it with mud, geo grid (a square mesh netting), and geo cells (wavy rubberised sheets). On top of all this they put another layer of mud to plant grass.

The  gas from the landfill is converted into CNG for household uses and automobiles.
