The Non- Alignment Movement

Explanation:

  • Policy of non alignment gained importance during the Cold war era. The period after the second world war saw the rise of two power blocs- US and USSR and the emergence of Cold war between them which was an ideological warfare between the two, with both countries extending their influence by forming alliances. Thus, non alignment implied not aligning with any of these power blocs.  Policy of non alignment is anti-military alliances. It does not mean isolation from World affairs rather playing an active role in mediating between the Soviet and American alliances.  It aims at promoting World Peace and friendly nations with all States. It does not favour the inception of military basis on Indian soil or in any other non-aligned country.  It implies following an independent foreign policy .Founding members of the non alignment were India, Indonesia, Yugoslavia, Egypt.
  • The founding fathers of NAM were Pandit Nehru(India),General Nasser(Egypt),Marshal Tito(Yugoslavia), Kwame Nkrumah(Ghana)and Sukarno(Indonesia).
