Hemoglobin (Hb), the pigment that gives blood its red colour, provides the transport of blood gases. It carries oxygen from lungs to the rest of the body and a portion of carbon dioxide in the opposite direction.

Many of the molecules the body needs to transport, such as urea , carbon dioxide and glucose, are soluble in water. This means that a large number of substances can be transported around the body in plasma at any one time.
