As the name suggests, the main role of nitrogen fixing bacteria is to fix atmospheric nitrogen gas.

The atmospheric nitrogen is present as N2. This is present as N triple bond N which has a quite high bond energy thus making it impossible for most of the biological systems to use it in its original form.

Nitrogen fixing bacteria convert it into nitrates, nitrites and ammonium compounds. Nitrogen in this form is easy to absorb and use in biological systems.

However this is not the only function. Many nitrogen fixing bacteria also produce certain growth promoting substances such as indole-3-acetic acid and indole-3-butyric acid. Also, they may produce siderophores which are low molecular weight iron chelating compounds. These compounds also help in plant growth.

Along with all these growth promoting functions, many nitrogen fixers are also known to produce antimicrobial substances that inhibit the growth of various other microorganisms.

Hope this helps.
