The most widely used contraceptive method is female sterilization, followed in order by the intra-uterine device (IUD), the contraceptive pill, male condoms, traditional methods (withdrawal, rhythm method) and , injections or implants (hormonal methods based on products similar to the pill). One of couple out of three who use contraception in the world are sterilized and 9 in 10 sterilized persons are women.
Induced abortion is sometimes used as a last resort following contraceptive failure and in countries where contraceptives are prohibited or unavailable. In 2008, 43,8 million induced abortions were performed, including 21,6 million in dangerous and illegal conditions that cause the death of almost 70,000 women each year.

FEMALE STERILIZATION
Female sterilization is a permanent procedure to prevent pregnancy. It works by blocking the fallopian tubes. When women choose not to have children, sterilization can be a good option. It’s a slightly more complex and expensive procedure than male sterilization (vasectomy).Female sterilization is most common in developing countries. Women ages 40–44 years are more likely than all other age groups to use female sterilization, with 51 percent choosing it as their primary birth control method.

WORKING
Sterilization blocks or seals the fallopian tubes. This prevents the egg from reaching the uterus and also keeps the sperm from reaching the egg. Without fertilization of the egg, pregnancy can’t occur.

Tubal ligation is effective immediately after the procedure. Nonsurgical sterilization may take up to three months to be effective as the scar tissue forms. Results for both procedures are typically permanent with small risk of failure.

Hope it helps
