By moving water from the vascular system into the tiny feet, the sea star can make a foot move by expanding it. This is how sea stars move around. Muscles within the feet are used to retract them. Each ray of a sea star has a light sensitive organ called eyespot

The organs by which starfish move are known as tube feet.

Explanation:

  • Tube feet also known as podia are small tubular projections present on the surface of starfish.
  • These feet are a part of the water vascular system which is important for locomotion, feeding, respiration and waste transport in echinoderms.
  • Numerous water channels or canals connect to each foot. Water taken in is pushed into the feet by contractile muscles and generates hydraulic pressures which cause the feet to extend and the starfish to move.
  • The water is then pushed out and the muscles retract. This process continues in cycle for each step in a movement.
