n other Archaea, such as Methanomicrobium and Desulfurococcus, the wall may be composed only of surface-layerproteins, known as an S-layer. S-layersare common in bacteria, where they serve as either the sole cell-wallcomponent or an outer layer in conjunction with polysaccharides.

The ‘innermost layer’ is the cell membrane and the ‘outer most layer’ is the lipopolysaccharide layer.

Explanation:

  • The prokaryotes can be either ‘gram positive’ and ‘gram negative’ in nature. In case of gram positive organisms the cell envelope consists of the outer ‘cell wall’ and the inner cell membrane.
  • In case of the gram negative organisms the outer layer consists of the lipopolysaccharide layer, then comes the cell wall and the innermost component is the plasma membrane.
  • The difference in the cell wall is attributed by the ‘virulence of the organism’ concerned.
