William l, who was more popularly known by the name of William the Conqueror was the Duke of Normandy born in 1028 Falaise, France. He succeeded his father as Duke of Normandy, subduing (silencing) rebellions and becoming the mightiest noble in France. He died in Rouen on 9th September 1087.
In 1051 Edward the Confessor promised William I to make him the heir of the English throne. But after the the death of Edward on 1066, Harold Godwinesom (Harold II) who was the earl of Wessex was accepted as the king of England. Determined to to assert his right to the throne, William sailed from Normandy with his troops and defeated Harold at the Battle of Hastings. He later sent his men to London to built a castle and crowned himself as the King of England on 25th December 1066.
In the upcoming years after becoming the King of England, William also invaded Scotland in 1072 and Wales in 1081, in order to secure the frontier's of England. Before deing, he devided the lands between his sons, giving Normandy and Maine to Robert II and England to William II.
