It is due to atmospheric refraction
Light ray from the star travels through the space unhindered. The continously changing atmosphere refracts the light from the stars
When the atmosphere refracts more starlight toward us, the intensity of starlight is increased and the stars appear to be brigher
When the atmosphere refracts small light, the intensity of starlight is decreased and the stars appear to be dim
In this way, the amount of starlight reaching our eyes increases and decreases continously
This causes star to twinkle
