The doctrine of lapse was a policy of the British East India Company under which if the ruler of a princely state or territory under the paramountcy of the Company died without a natural heir, the state/territory would automatically be annexed to the British empire.

Contrary to the popular idea, Lord Dalhousie was NOT the one who devised this policy. It was articulated by the Court of Directors of the East India Company as early as 1834 and several smaller states were already annexed under this doctrine before Dalhousie took over the post of Governor-General.

However, Lord Dalhousie was the one to use it most vigorously and extensively and that it why it is generally associated with him.

Some of the major states annexed under this policy were Surat, Nagpur, Jhansi, Sambhalpur, Arcot, Punjab.

The doctrine of Lapse by Lord Dalhousie was the policy devised by the British under which Nagpur, Satara, and Jhansi were annexed.

Explanation:

  • This policy was termed as an intelligent step exercised against the weaker princes who were under the British supremacy. In process, the policy did not allow Indian kings to adopt sons and that very kingdom should be taken over the British.
  • This policy successfully brought many territories under their control including from rich to prosperous included Nagpur, Jhansi and Satara. However, this policy was opposed by several dynasties and kingdoms including Jhansi to avoid going into British hands.
