Name the process associated with the following:

(a) Dry ice is kept at room temperature and at one atmospheric pressure.

(b) A potassium permanganate crystal is in a beaker and water is poured into the beaker with stirring.

(c) An acetone bottle is left open and the bottle becomes empty.

(d) Milk is churned to separate cream from it.

(e) Settling of sand when a mixture of sand and water is left undisturbed for some time.

Answer:

A. The process is sublimation because when dry ice (solid CO2) is kept at room temperature at one atmospheric pressure, it sublimes leaving no residue.

B. When potassium permanganate crystals are kept in beaker and water is poured and stirred, the particles of potassium permanganate would mix with water, because of motion of particles, stirring speed up the mixing process, hence this is the process of diffusion.

C. A acetone bottle is left open and the bottle becomes empty. Answer: Since acetone vaporizes at room temperature, when a acetone bottle is left open the acetone would vaporize and mix with air, thus this is the process of vaporization.

D. Centrifugation is a process which involves the use of the centrifugal force for the sedimentation of heterogeneous mixtures with a centrifuge for churning milk to separate cream from it. The process is used to separate two immiscible liquids.

E. When mixture of sand and water is left undisturbed, the sand settle at the bottom of water, thus this is the process of sedimentation.

Answer:

(a) Sublimation:

When dry ice is kept open at room temperature, it turns into gas.

(b) Diffusion

KMnO4 Crystals mixes with the particles of the water.

(c) Vapourization:

Since acetone vaporizes at room temperature , it is always stored in bottle.

(d) Centrifugation

Milk is churned to separate from curd by the centrifugation process where the lighter particles will float and denser particles will settle at bottom in centrifuge machine.

(e) Sedimentation:

Sedimentation is process where sand will settle at bottom of water if left undisturbed.
