2Na + 2H2O --> 2NaOH + H2 The reaction is exo Thermic. So hot that the sodium catches on fire instantaneously. Product is sodium hydroxide, and hydrogen gas.

It causes a two-stage explosion. In the first stage,  sodium produces hydrogen and a large amount of heat in addition to sodium hydroxide. Second, hydrogen ignites to form water. The more sodium used, the more reaction products and the larger the explosion.

2H₂ +O₂ = 2H₂O

There is a reason for the second reaction: sodium reacts very violently with water.
