The chemical formula of Plaster of Paris (POP) is CaSO4.½ H2O.
Gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) is formed on mixing POP with water as follows:
CaSO4.½ H2O + 1½ H2O → CaSO4.2H2O
Uses of POP:
In hospitals, as plaster for supporting fractured bones in the right position.
For making decorative materials and for making wall surfaces smooth.

As a fire-proofing material.

paddy3: i think so formula of pop is wrong its not 1/2
muski1606: no it is right pls refer to any reference book and check whether it is correct or not
paddy3: ok

When Plaster Of Paris is mixed with water it changes to gypsum,which is a hard solid mass.

Here, is the equation for the above reaction.

CaSO₄.1/2H₂O + 1( 1/2 )H₂O ---> CaSO₄.2H₂O

The CaSO₄.2H₂O formed is gypsum.

Gypsum is used to make plaster of Paris.

The Plaster of Paris is useful in following ways -->
1)When mixed with water, the plaster is used for setting fractured bones in right position.
2) It used in project works by students
