Concentration Nitric acid and conc Sulphuric acid are used to convert phenol into picric acid.

Explanation:

  • Phenol contains benzene ring with a hydroxyl group at one end attached to the benzene ring.
  • Phenol is converted to picric acid by using concentrated nitric acid which donates the nitrate group to the benzene ring and concentrated sulphuric acid which acts as a dehydrating substance.
  • This reaction liberates water due to the action of sulphuric acid. Picric acid is used as an antiseptic in the field of medicine and the making of explosives.
