Chloride ions , sulphate ions of Catayons are responsible for hardness of water.calcium and magnesium are the most common sources of water hardness. The permanent hardness of water may be due to the presence of chlorides or sulphates of calcium or magnesium or of both.  On the other hand, temporary hardness may be due to the presence of bicarbonates of calcium and magnesium or of both.
