Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Indian National Congress (INC) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) enjoy the status of national party in India.
(i) Bharatiya Janata Party BJP itself won 31% of all votes and 282 (51.9%) of all seats. NDA’s combined vote share was 38.5%.
(ii) Indian National Congress INC won 44 seats and 19.3% of all votes. It was the Congress Party’s worst defeat in a general election.
(iii) Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPI(M) won 9 seats in 2014 general election. CPI(M)’s vote share declined from 5.33% in 2009 polls to 3.2% in 2014 elections. Other national parties like Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Communist Party of India (CPl) and National Congress Party (NCP) achieved poor result in 2014 general elections. Due to this, their status as national party may be removed. But the issue is not yet settled.
