India has been subjected to many social problems such as inequality against people of lower castes and tribes. However, India was fortunate to have several reformers who had come forward to fight caste discrimination and who devoted their lives for the society’s betterment and for the upliftment of the oppressed
EXPLANATION:
- Jyothiba Pule: One of the prominent social reformers who led the crusade against the prevalent caste discrimination in India. He rebelled against the dominance of Brahmins and fought for the rights of the lower caste people.
- Swami Dayanand Saraswati: He believed in pragmatism and preached against several rituals of the Hindu religion like caste-system, idol-worship, animal sacrifices and restricting women to read the Vedas.
- Swami Vivekananda: He was resolutely against any kind of social evil propagated by dogmas and religious logic and was of the understanding that Hindu belief in untouchability should change for the nation to progress.
- Dr. BR Ambedkar: His key contribution was fighting for the rights of the lower caste people and Dalits or untouchables. During the preparation of the Govt. of India Act, 1919, he advocated separate electorates for the Dalits and lower caste people. He also demanded reservation for these communities.
- Periyar: He felt that vicious people created caste distinctions to dominate Indian society. He was known for his ‘Self-respect Movement’ which intended at creating pride amongst the lower caste. Periyar stressed that people should develop self-respect and learn to scrutinize propositions logically. He was known as a leader of the lower castes after he led a crusade in the year 1924 demanding entry of Dalits in Kerala temples.
