Tooth decay starts when the ph of the mouth is lower than 5.5. Tooth enamel made up of calcium hydroxypatite which is the hardest substance in thr body. It does not dissolve but get corroded when the ph is less than 5.5. Bacteria present in the mouth produce acids by degradation of sugar and food particles remaining in the mouth. The best way to prevent this by cleanning the mouth after eating and by using tooth paste which are generally basic and can neutralise the excess of acid and prevent tooth decay.   Hope this helped.
