French society was divided into three estates during the medieval period to the early modern period. Popularly referred to as the estates of the realm, this division consisted of the clergy, nobility, and bourgeoisie or third estate.

Explanation:

  • This division created a societal hierarchy and inequality, where some sections were bestowed with certain privileges and the rest were left to dry out. The Monarchy consisted of the King and Queen, who were not counted in any of the other estates.
  • The clergy consisted of the high up priests. Nobility included high-class traders and ministers, rich people. The bourgeoisie or third estate comprised of the poorer section of the French society- peasants, farmers, Craftsman came in this category.
  • The first two enjoyed many privileges ranging from political privileges to livelihood. The clergy and nobility were exempted from paying taxes; the bourgeoisie bearded the burden of all the taxes.
