Three types of salivary glands are found in the mouth cavity. They are
Parotid glands, sublingual glands and submandibular glands located in the mouth cavity.
Parotid glands are the largest salivary glands located at the side of the face below and in front of each ear.
Sublingual glands are under the mucous membrane covering with mouth and below the tongue.
Submandibular glands lie near the inner side of the lower jaw bone.
In mammals, salivary glands secreted saliva in mouth.
Three salivary glands:
1. Parotid gland:
There are two parotid gland which is located in the lower jaw of the mouth. It is used in chewing the food and this secretes the alpha amylase which helps in digesting the starch. This is the big salivary glands. Mumps is the disease that infects parotid gland.
2. Sublingual gland:
This gland is located in the under the lower jaw and top of digastric muscles. The secretion is a mixture of mucus and serosal fluid. This gland produce 70% of saliva and it is smaller compared to parotid gland.
3. Submandibular gland:
This gland is located in the inner and underneath of the tongue. This gland produces 5% of the saliva. The secretion is a mucus.
