The traditional methods of irrigation include the following:

Check Basin Method

Furrow Irrigation Method

Strip Irrigation Method

Basin Irrigation Method

  • The Check Basin Method is among the best irrigation techniques for levelled fields. The field is separated into basins based on its ability to hold water. The basin is connected by a tiny drain. The size of the basin depends on the water inflow. The primary water source is located at the top of the field.
  • In crops that are grown in rows, furrow irrigation is highly prevalent. Water rushes between two "Dols," which are formed along the sides of the rows and mean "to sprout."
  • The need for more water is eliminated after the furrow is filled. Although labor-intensive, it is rather inexpensive. This approach uses a lot of water to irrigate food crops that are spread out across a vast region.
  • Fields are separated into strips of varying sizes for strip irrigation. The strips are built taking into account the slope. The size of the strips is based on the topography of the land. It is a simple irrigation technique that requires minimal work.
  • In the Basin Irrigation Method, the trees and plants are surrounded by a raised platform. After that, drains are attached to them. This technique is effective for watering trees and bushes but not crops. But using this approach wastes a lot of water.

Hence, these four are the traditional methods of irrigation.
