The most widely accepted explanation is that the Moon formed from the debris left over after a giant impact between Earth and a Mars-sized body called Theia. The Moon is in synchronous rotation with Earth, and thus always shows the same side to Earth, the near side.

atulkadose1430: This is caused by the different angles from which we see the bright part of the Moon's surface.  These are called "phases" of the Moon.  Of course, the Moon doesn't generate any light itself; it just reflects the light of the Sun.  The Moon passes through four major shapes during a cycle that repeats itself every 29.5 days.

Two extreme shapes of the moon are the full moon and the new moon. Full moon is when the entire moon becomes visible while at the new moon, the moon cannot be seen at all. The time interval between these two events is 15 days.

Hope this works!!!
