For many European powers, colonies were considered essential to supply natural resources and other essential goods. Moreover, the colonizers thought it was the mission of the ‘advanced’ European nations to civilize the backward people. Thus French colonised Vietnam to exploit its resources for their own use.

Hey mate !

Here is your answer:

France’s involment in the colonisation of Indochina in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century was purely economical : it was France’s most populated and wealthiest colony area by far.

It was not only composed of Vietnam, but also Laos, Cambodia and a part of China, at some point including Siam as well.

Cochinchina was never meant to be a French people’s settlement, but a purely economical colony, mainly relying on hevea, minerals and rice exports to the mainland.

Very few French people actually moved there and local governments were kept in place, leading to numerous rebellions, mainly in Vietnam.

After WW2 it all crumbled out. France created the Vietnam state in 1949 as a wish to de-escalate the conflict, but it was too late.

The French defeat at the battle of Diên Biên Phu in 1953–1954 and the succeeding Geneva Accords sealed the scission between the former territories, creating the states of Laos, Cambodia, and creating the states of Northern and Southern Vietnam, directly leading to the US involvement due to Northern Vietnam’s Communist allegieance.

Hope it helps
