Required Question :-

Name the two important by products of sugar cane other than the sugar and Jaggery ?

Required Answer :-

Two important by products of sugarcane are  :-

1. Fuel and chemicals (Bagasse, Molasses and Alcohol)

2. Fertilizer (Press Mud and Spent Wash)

I) Bagasse :-

  • Bagasse is the dry pulpy fibrous residue that remains after sugarcane or sorghum stalks are crushed to extract their juice.
  • It is used as a biofuel for the production of heat, energy, and electricity, and in the manufacture of pulp and building materials.
  • Agave bagasse is a similar material that consists of the tissue of the blue agave after extraction of the sap.

II) Alcohol :-

  1. Alcohol sometimes referred to by the chemical name ethanol, is a psychoactive drug that is the active ingredient in drinks such as beer, wine, and distilled spirits (hard liquor).
  2. It is one of the oldest and most common recreational substances, causing the characteristic effects of alcohol intoxication ("drunkenness").
  3. Among other effects, alcohol produces a mood lift and euphoria, decreased anxiety, increased sociability, sedation, impairment of cognitive, memory, motor, and sensory function, and generalized depression of central nervous system function.

III) Spent wash :-

  • Spent wash is the residual liquid waste generated during alcohol production and pollution caused by it is one of the most critical environmental issues.
  • Despite standards imposed on effluent quality, untreated or partially treated effluent very often finds access to water courses.

IV) Press mud :-

  • Sugarcane press mud is the residue of the filtration of sugarcane juice.
  • The clarification process separates the juice into a clear juice that rises to the top and goes for manufacture, and a mud that collects at the bottom.
  • The mud is then filtered to separate the suspended matter, which includes insoluble salts and fine Bagasse.
  • There are 3 types of filter :- the press filters, mechanical filters and rotary vacuum filters
