Name the two major system of a flowering plants.
The two main systems found in plants are-
1)The Root System
2)The Shoot System
The root system
It is the underground part of the plant and it consists of main root it’s branches and root hairs. The root system performs the following functions-
1. It anchors the plant to the soil.
2. It absorbs water along with minerals from soil.
3. It also stores food.
4. In some plants roots perform secondary functions and are modified into different shapes. Examples are storage ( carrot, radish turnip), reproduction ( sugar beet, Dahlia, Asparagus etc.), nitrogen fixation ( Medicago) respiration ( mangrove like Rhizophora).
The shoot system
It is the aerial part of the plant and consists of stem, branches, leaves , buds, flowers and fruits containing seeds. The shoot system performs following functions-
The stem and it’s branches conduct water from root to other parts on plant. It conducts food from leaves to root.
Leaves perform photosynthesis , respiration and transpiration.
Flowers perform reproduction and ultimately ripen to form fruits and seeds.
Seeds are units of propagation.
